So this all started back in october. we noticed zeus was favoring his right hind leg. Not limping, but resting it when standing. we watched it and did a few weeks of anti-inflammatory. He seemed to get better, then he would limp. we finalyl took him in to vet since he was still resting it. they proscribed anti-inflamoitories and crate rest. This is a dog that is only over 3 years old. There was never a idea that it might be cancer.
Then the worse happened. we came home and his brother was paralyzed. he had ruptured 4 disks in his back. so the next month was taken up with surgery recovery and therapy for his brother.
Once his brother was up and walking on his own, time to turn back and find out why zeus is still favoring his leg, and now limping ever so slight.
we took him in expecting to find out he messed up his knee and 16 weeks of recovery.
When our vet called she was devastated. it never crossed their mind it would be cancer. he never flinched on exam. they even went back and checked after seeing x-rays and they still could not find it manually.
Off to oncologist we went. This was hard to accept.
We met with his oncologist and found out all the info we needed to be confused.
the first thing is amputation.
we thought he is not limping why take his leg off.
we finally decided to take his leg off.
we met with the surgeon ,she did not feel comfortable about it since he was not presenting like a dog with bone cancer.
so.. we opted for a biopsy.
it came back positive for osteosarcoma , we were devastated, he is still running and playing..how can he have cancer.
we scheduled his amputation for a few days later.
this whole time wondering if we were doing the right thing.
back to today
we just finished second round of chemo, he seems to be doing well with it. he is running around like he never needed that 4th leg.
i know we still have a lot in front of us. but the cancer had not spread to limp nodes .
and we are on the road to making his life better as long as we can/
.
